Joe Ferraro, Wendy Goodenow, Jerry Hofwolt and Joe Rice were recognized by PBN’s Book of Lists and Sunrise’s “book of donations.” Dave Mozdren also led a round of Happy Birthday for July through October birthdays.

Pennies for Polio
Sunrisers used their engineering skills to fold and decorate boxes for loose change. Rotary’s goal: raise $200 million to secure a $355 matching grant from the Bill and Linda Gates Foundation.

Rotary Opens Eyes
Five Rotary Clubs are donating $500 per club to provide cataract surgeries for 10 needy people in Surabaya–Selatan, Indonesia, the hometown of President-Elect Amin Leiman. In addition to Honolulu Sunrise, participating Rotary Clubs are East Honolulu, Essendon (Australia), Wanganui (New Zealand) and the host club of Surabaya–Selatan, Indonesia.

eGlobal Family Brightens Smiles
Sunrisers Rob Hail and Masa Edamura visited Future Light Orphanage in Cambodia to celebrate high school and college graduations. They took older kids to the beach and mountains, while younger kids (including Rob) went to the water park. eGlobal Family was started by Rob Hail and is now expanding to Indonesia and the Philippines. eglobalfamily.org.

Can foreign students help balance our state's budget?

How much do foreign students bring into Hawaii’s economy? According to guest speaker Dr. Joel Weaver, Director of the Hawaii English Language Program-HELP at the University of Hawaii, their net contribution to our local economy nets at more than $160 million in tuition, fees, room and board. Now that’s something to think about.

Life is like a bowl of pasta

This week’s meeting opened with an inspiring story by PP Jerry Hofwalt about his trip to Italy and a magnificent pasta sauce which was made perfect by many loving hands. He likened it to the way friends and family touch our lives, each adding their special “seasonings” that make it richer.

October 20 - Palama Settlement Community Service Project
Following last year’s successful reading/dinner project, we’ll be back at Palama Settlement with books for children to read to their parents. The reading event will be from 5:30 -–7:30, with helping hands needed from 5–8pm for set up, reading and clean up.

A huge mahalo to Col. Kamemoto for organizing the 7th Annual Rotary Camping/BBQ. We had a good turn out, including Bruno and past member Greg Hansen and his family. Boogie boarding, golf lessons/driving range, miniature golf, and lots of food. It was fabulous!

FLO kids hit the beach




Sunrise PP and founder of eGlobal Family, Rob Hail, sent photos of his recent trip to Future Light Orphanage during which they took 100 FLO children to the mountains and beach for three days. This is the first time they included blind children as a volunteer project for the FLO kids, creating a learning environment as well as one of discovery. As another first, they added an “environmental cleanup” where the hundred plus children would fan out with bags and pick up trash after visiting an attraction. According to Rob, they got quite a few odd looks as it’s “kind of a new concept in Cambodia!...Hopefully it will catch on.” Next, Rob & Co. will be taking the younger children to the water park. Join Honolulu Sunrise for a sun-filled weekend and/or Saturday evening bbq at Bellows.

This is the first camping trip that’s just for us, so relaxing and fun are at the top of the agenda. Plans include boogie boarding, mini golf and the driving range, and fine meals cooked under the watchful eye of the Colonel. Honolulu Sunrise presents opportunities for two promising students.

Welcome to Ghina (pronounced Gina) Raida Asilia, the second Rotary Youth Exchange Program (YEP) student sponsored by Honolulu Sunrise. Thanks to Carolyn Hiatt and Susi Taylor for helping to arrange Gina’s full scholarship at Le Jardin Academy.
Susi is graciously hosting Ghina until Ken Marcus returns this week. We are looking for a second host family. Says Amin Leiman, President Elect, “Last year, we initiated this wonderful opportunity and brought Tya Noor to Honolulu, Hawaii. Tya had an awesome cultural experience with us and brought back lots of sweet memories from Hawaii.” Ghina enjoys swimming, singing, playing piano and guitar. Her parents and two brothers live in Jakarta.




Phearun (pronounced Peh-roon) Chhorn is a remarkable young man. Formerly from Future Light Orphanage in Cambodia. Phearun will be attending the University of Hawaii with the long-term goal of studying international relations then returning to Cambodia and joining the diplomatic service. Says host mom Nancy Walden (who coordinated Phearun’s arrangements), “He knows more about American history than most people his age.” This Monday, Phearun will join 65 foreign students in the Hawaii English Language Program at UH to prepare for the rigorous TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) so that he can begin his classes. Phearun will be staying with Nancy for the first semester, then moving on to life in the dorms. Mahalo to Phearun’s sponsors for this incredible opportunity.

Peter Carlisle speaks to Honolulu Sunrise

Mahalo to speaker Hilton Raethel

Last Monday, we heard an encouraging presentation by Hilton Raethel, Senior Vice President at HMSA, Hawaii's largest health care provider. Hilton discussed Sustainable Health Care, HMSA's initiatives toward controlling rising health care costs, which will include partnerships with Queens Hospital and other providers. Rob Hai'ls eGlobal Family update from Indonesia

Last week, Rob Hail met with the Madania organization in Jogyakarta. The organization takes care of about a hundred orphanded and poor children and has a baby nursery and a facility on the edge of town for their older teens and young adults who are disabled from either polio, losing a limb, auto accident, etc. This handicapped group tries to earn money by selling water they purify and clothes they sew. They would also like to add baked goods to their product line as many of them know how to bake but they don't have a proper oven, mixer and basic supplies.

Rob asked for their wish list and they replied an oven and baking tools and supplies. Thanks to generous Sunrisers, Rob used most of the $202 in "aloha dollars" on purchasing a good blender, diapers, soap and milk formula for the nursery. The orphanage has about 14 babies, the youngest is 11 days old.

While in Jogya, Rob also met with the Jogya Rotary twice regarding a potential partnership.

Says Rob, “Spending time with other Rotarians here makes me appreciate more what a wonderful worldwide organization we belong to. It has also been a pleasure helping to set up our new foster parent program here and welcoming our new orphanage into our eGlobal Family".
