SHOWCASING THE HONOLULU ACADEMY OF ARTS

On May 9th, we were pleased to welcome guest speaker, Stephan Jost, the new director at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Jost was the former director at Vermont's Shelburne Museum and will be bringing his enthusiasm and ideas to revitalize Hawaii's premier museum. Among the changes that Jost will oversee is the merger of the Academy with The Contemporary Museum. Be inspired at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

$10,000 Weinberg Donation to the Alliance for Drama Education

There are few things as rewarding as a job well done, or in our case, two jobs well done. Thanks to the assistance of the Downtown Club, hands-on efforts from T-shirt Theater's George Kon and his family, and a hearty group of Sunrisers, we weeded, painted and pounded at Keiki O Ka Aina Preschool to earn $10,000 from the Weinberg Foundation to donate to the Alliance for Drama Education's T-shirt Theater at Farrington High School. A big mahalo to Nolan Pong, Jan Taketa and Charlie DuBoyce for coordinating our Weinberg effort!

Club News


After lively bidding, PP Jerry Hofwolt (and Wally) won two rounds of golf at Koolina donated by Ken Marcus. Proceeds will benefit our club's Japan relief efforts. As always, we were happy to see new and familiar faces. Aloha to Liz Kane, AG Central Oahu, and Volkmar Kunereth, guest of President Elect Amin Leiman.

WEINBERG FOUNDATION SERVICE PROJECT

Many hands make light work. That was the phrase of the day as Rotarians from Honolulu Sunrise, assisted by members of the Rotary Club of Downtown, cleaned classrooms, painted walls, weeded gardens, cleared overgrowth, created a playground and assembled and installed a toyshed for Keiki O Ka Aina Preschool in Palolo Valley. Thanks to everyone's support, we will receive $10,000 from the Weinberg Foundation for the Alliance for Drama Education's T-Shirt Theater

ONE FOR THE MONEY, TWO FOR THE SHOW

Who said Calabash Monday's aren't exciting? Last week we featured vocational talks from our very own Allen Kamemoto and Mike Doss.



Allen Kamemoto, CFP, CLU, has been working for 30 years as an independent agent and financial planner. He likened the expertise of Certified Financial Planning practitioners to CPAs versus accountants, offering a higher level of service and education to guide clients in all aspects of their financial lives, including insurance, investments and estate planning. As people live longer, their needs change, and with the multitude of financial products available it can be difficult to know what's best. Allen's motto is "simplify." He helps clients concentrate on those products which best meet their needs and consolidate policies to make life simpler. Allen brings heartfelt passion into his work, helping his clients achieve their personal and financial goals with caring and integrity. He is also a retired Colonel with the U.S. Army Reserve and the commander in charge of our Club's Rotary camping trips. Mike Doss started with the YMCA 23 years ago and is now the COO of the YMCA of Honolulu, overseeing all nine branches in Hawaii. The YMCA's three-point value proposition emphasizes youth development, healthier living and social responsibility and provides programs tailored to each community. Through a steady plan of branch improvements and innovative dues re-structuring, Mike and the membership team have grown the YMCA's membership from 6,000 to over 20,000 members, halfway to their goal of 40,000. YMCA trivia: The Windward YMCA is the only YMCA to have a heeiau, the Leeward branch is the only one to have a smokestack, and the Nuuanu branch was the first race-integrated branch in America (1890). Our March 18th, our meeting featured the winning team of Wayne Vierra, Director of Ticket Sales for Ahahui  Koa Anuenue, University of Hawaii Office of Intercollegiate Athletics and Alvin Katahara, Director of Annual Giving and Executive Director of the UH Na Koa Football Club. Together, they are bringing a renewed energy to the UH athletics program which supports 19 sports and the academic and athletic success of more than 500 student-athletes. WHO YOU GONNA CALL?

If there's something strange in your neighborhood...who you gonna call? Jack Ballentine, SFPD. From barely missing being hit by the bullet that was meant for President Ford to heading hostage negotiations to a hair-raising episode with an organ grinder and his spider monkey, guest speaker Lt. Jack Ballentine has seen it all. After retiring from 40 years on the San Francisco Police Force, Jack is now a principal and founding partner of Security Training Institute.

It was an evening of fun and festivities at the Pacific Club this weekend when Honolulu Sunrise celebrated our annual fundraiser. Mark your calendar: Weinberg Project, April 23

Two weeks ago, we met Momi Akana (with Vernon Wong and Charlie Du Boyce), Executive Director of Keiki O Ka Aina Learning Centers, this year's Weinberg Project work recipient. We'll need all hands on deck as we build a natural playground for their preschool in Palolo Valley.



We also met Walt Dulaney and George Kon (with Rebecca Akina, Jay Jurick and Jan Taketa), founders of the Alliance for Drama Education which uses drama to help students "rehearse for life." Their T-Shirt Theater based at Farrington High School will be our $10,000 Weinberg project recipient.

EGYPT: AN INSIDE PERSPECTIVE

Mahalo to guest speaker Past District 5000 Governor Ayman El-Dakhakhni of the Rotary Club of Honolulu Sunset. Ayman was born in Alexandria, Egypt. He provided insight on Egypt's pivotal role in the Middle East.

Japan today, Egypt tomorrow

Honolulu Sunrise wants to send our aloha and best wishes to the people of Japan, and the Rotary Clubs in Tokyo and Fukushima.

Last week, we were pleased to once again present guest speaker Richard Halloran who provided insight into Japan's leadership today. What a great meeting!









Next week we have a special speaker, Ayman El-Dakhakni, Past District 5000 Governor. He will provide our club with real perspective on the recent changes on Egypt and other regional countries.

Moving Forward

Mahalo to this week's guest speaker, Jean Evans of Palama Settlement. Established in 1896, Palama Settlement has been providing children and families in the Kalihi–Palama area with dental care, after school care and family support for over 100 years.



This week, we welcomed potential member Douglas "Kalani" Akiu, an agent with New York Life, and Liz Kane, District 5000 Assistant Governor of Central Oahu Clubs. Mei Nakamoto inspired us with a story about the dedication of Special Olympics coaches, and the exciting potential shown by candidates for the Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation Scholarship.

Khmer Cultural Show & New Year Celebration

Honolulu Sunrise Rotarian Rob Hail founded eGlobal Family, an email foster parent program that began with Future Light Orphanage in Cambodia and is now expanding to help children in Indonesia and the Philippines.

Although it is not a Rotary program, many of our club members are email foster parents and have developed close relationships with our children. We invite you to support Hawaii's Khmer community as they raise funds to help the children of Future Light Orphanage.

It's All in the Telling

Last week, guest speaker Willie Jones mesmerized his Sunrise audience with the story of his life—from a world-traveling army brat who didn't realize he was "Black" until his family moved to the South and tackling the challenges of race relations for the U.S. Air Force to becoming a highly decorated Vietnam veteran and being named Toastmasters International's 1997 World Champion of Public Speaking.

The Old Pali Road

Catching up from February 7... President Paul Sibley treated the club to King Cake, flown in from his home town of N'Orleans just in time for Mardis Gras.





We welcomed visiting Rotarian Linda Kling from Grand Manan in New Brunswick, Canada (top right), and also prospective member Eric Mondi (bottom left), guest of Kim Green.
