Rotarian of the Week: Paul Sibley
Honolulu Sunrise President Paul Sibley grew up in southern Louisiana where he graduated with a B.S. in Finance from Louisiana State University then a M.B.A from the University of San Francisco with dual concentrations in International Business Management and Finance. Paul has worked for HMSA since 2002 leveraging his previous finance and consulting skills developed over the past 17 years in investment banking, IT consulting, real estate development and commercial lending. At HMSA, Paul is involved in most aspects of the company from payment reform models to community collaborative grant writing, and more.
Outside of HMSA, Paul is a board member of the Lyon Arboretum Association, active with the American Cancer Society and involved with endurance events while spending all available time with his lovely wife of 11 years and their two young boys.

At Honolulu Sunrise, we started the week with some of our favorite people: Liz Kane, D5000 Assistant Governor, Central Oahu Clubs; Pete’s wife, Judy Van Zile; former member, Pastor Dan, who exchanged banners from Tiburon-Belvedere, California with President Paul Sibley and Russell Akamine who lead the 4-Way Test.
Vocational Talk: Jay Jurick
We all knew Jay Jurick’s business TurnOn Tech did “something” with computers… as it turns out, computers are just a means to an end. Jay’s goal is simplification. He helps companies create a single-solution for all their needs, including accounting, contacts, job tracking, inventory, delivery, etc. Or in Jay’s words, “One system to run a business—a single data set.” And while Jay’s been pushing this smart way of working long before cloud (Internet-based) computing became popular, the rest of the world is finally catching up. As for the photo, Jay started his presentation by talking about “questionable” influences in his young life… we think he turned out ok.

Monday’s speaker, Frank Haas, is the Dean for Hospitality, Business, and Legal Education at Kapi‘olani Community College. He has extensive experience in marketing and tourism—experience that’s coming in handy in these challenging years.
In Frank’s talk titled “Hawaii tourism at a crossroads,” he explains that Hawaii lost 1 million in visitors in the last 2 years, but lost $2.7 billion in visitor spending. Trends in the economy have resulted in switching from “class to mass.” What does he hope for Hawaii’s future? Among many suggestions, Haas advocates increased measurement and accountability, defining Hawaii’s brand as the destination for niche markets and courting high-end tourists who can create sustainable markets, for example, the elite Chinese. Fast forward to 2010 and Wendy has been in the service business for 39 years: Chuck’s Steak House from 1972-80 and the travel agency business since 1980, during which time she worked for her mother for 10 years, with her mother for 4 years and now her mother, age 88, works for her. Wendy lives her travel through the trips she plans for her clients and has been fortunate to go to many places on Earth because of her work. She owns HNL Travel Associates and together with her agents, they have over 300 years of travel experience.

Rotary Foundation: Your best investment
The next time you’re asked to make a Rotary Foundation donation, think about 126 children who will remember Rotary and Rotoplast for the rest of their lives. This year, a Rotoplast medical team, including 10 members from Hawaii, performed 236 surgical procedures on 126 children with cleft palates in Sohag, Egypt.
This project was the brain child of Hawaii Past District Governor Ayman El Dakhakhni who participated by working 12 - 14 hrs a day. Through his vision and leadership, District 5000 stepped up to the plate and donated a total of $20,120, which was matched by Dedicated District Funds for a total project of $45,700.
The value of the surgeries and consultations: $614,485.
Walk To End Polio.
Join us at the "Exercise at Sunrise" event on October 23 to help end polio. The walk takes place at Fort Street Mall at 9:30 a.m. T-shirts for this event are $20.10 for adults, and $15.10 for children's sizes. Join the walk and make a difference.

Five Rotary Clubs are donating $500 per club to provide cataract surgeries for 10 needy people in Surabaya–Selatan, Indonesia, the hometown of President-Elect Amin Leiman. In addition to Honolulu Sunrise, participating Rotary Clubs are East Honolulu, Essendon (Australia), Wanganui (New Zealand) and the host club of Surabaya–Selatan, Indonesia.

Can foreign students help balance our state's budget?
How much do foreign students bring into Hawaii’s economy? According to guest speaker Dr. Joel Weaver, Director of the Hawaii English Language Program-HELP at the University of Hawaii, their net contribution to our local economy nets at more than $160 million in tuition, fees, room and board. Now that’s something to think about.

FLO kids hit the beach
Sunrise PP and founder of eGlobal Family, Rob Hail, sent photos of his recent trip to Future Light Orphanage during which they took 100 FLO children to the mountains and beach for three days. This is the first time they included blind children as a volunteer project for the FLO kids, creating a learning environment as well as one of discovery. As another first, they added an “environmental cleanup” where the hundred plus children would fan out with bags and pick up trash after visiting an attraction. According to Rob, they got quite a few odd looks as it’s “kind of a new concept in Cambodia!...Hopefully it will catch on.” Next, Rob & Co. will be taking the younger children to the water park. Join Honolulu Sunrise for a sun-filled weekend and/or Saturday evening bbq at Bellows.
This is the first camping trip that’s just for us, so relaxing and fun are at the top of the agenda. Plans include boogie boarding, mini golf and the driving range, and fine meals cooked under the watchful eye of the Colonel. Access into the base-side of the park must be pre-screened, so please tell Col. Allen Kamemoto asap if you “might” attend.
